چکیده

Studies on LS-protein, the soluble double antigen of vaccinia, and on the degradation products L'S and L''S' have been made with electrophoresis and in the analytical ultracentrifuge. LS, which is homogeneous electrically and in the ultracentrifuge, has an isoelectric point at pH 4.8. At 4 degrees C. its partial specific volume is 0.72 cc./gm., and its diffusion constant is 1.50 x 10(-7) cm.(2)/sec. The sedimentation constant is 6.35 at 20 degrees C., the molecular weight is 214,000, and the molecule appears to have an elongated ellipsoidal shape with an axis ratio of 1:20. L'S and L''S' are homogeneous electrically but not in the ultracentrifuge, L''S' being extremely polydisperse.

THE LS-ANTIGEN OF VACCINIA IV. CHEMICAL ANALYSIS O~" LS AND TIlE EFFECT OF CHYMOTRYPSIN ON LS* BY

Recent observations in our laboratories (1, 2) have demonstrated that a single molecular substance carries all of the serological activity of both the Land Ssoluble antigens of vaccinia. Craigie and Wishart, (3) who originally described these two antigens thought that they occurred in the form of a complex in nature, but, from their own observations (3) and from those of Parker (4), they were l...

Studies on the Soluble Precipitable Substances of Vaccinia

Observations on antibody production in the rabbit in response to the injection of the LS antigen of vaccinia have shown that this antigen retains its ability to stimulate the production of L and S antibodies, not only when it is in a state of solution as found in lapine Seitz filtrates, but also after it has been partially purified. As reported in previous papers, both the L and S antibodies pa...

Demonstration of the Sequential Development of Vaccinial Antigens and Virus in Infected Cells: Observations with Cytochemical and Differential Fluorescent Procedures

Virus-induced alterations in vaccinia virus-infected HeLa cells have been followed by immunofluorescent and cytochemical techniques. In a time sequence study, infected cells show an early increase in cytoplasmic RNA content, followed by appearance of centers of viral DNA synthesis in the cytoplasm. The centers of synthesis were detected at 4 hours post infection, with the acridine orange fluoro...

Disruption of Influenza Virus Properties of Degradation Products of the Virus Particle

Two different precipitating antigens have been extracted from vaccinia virus. One, designated the LS antigen (1), is a protein with two antigenically active groups (2, 3); the other, termed the NP antigen, is a nudeoprotein (4). These two antigens apparently comprise a large proportion of the mass of the virus particle. The soluble complement-fixing antigen of influenza virus is usually extract...
